Embodied carbon refers to emissions resulting from the manufacturing, transport, installation, maintenance and disposal of a chiller unit. Using those criteria as a measuring stick the amount of embodied carbon in yesterday’s chiller units was often substantial. But not anymore.
When compared to chillers manufactured 15 or 20 years ago today’s chiller units contain up to 50% less embodied carbon. That incredible result is largely due to the use of fewer raw materials in the manufacturing process and the fact that they utilise refrigerants with a lower global warming potential (GWP) than older units.
